A King's Dream: Doing for Others

posted Jan 19, 2012, 2:13 PM by Kelly Shannon

Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are we doing for others?’”

It was a great question during the height of the Civil Rights movement era. It’s a great question to ask today.

Blessed Is the Season that Engages the Whole World in a Conspiracy of Love

Christmas is upon us. Each year during this time, I smile when I pull out one of my favorite Christmas decorations I bought at a holiday market years ago. It’s a small sign that reads, “Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.”

For me, Christmas is a time I cherish with my family: playing cars and trucks and loving on my two-year-old nephew; engaging in long conversations with my 87-year-old Grandmother without worrying how much time has gone by; being a Daddy’s girl; and acting like a kid around my younger brother while Mama takes our picture in the very old Santa hats that she has somehow kept intact from our childhood years. I’m blessed for the season that engages our family in a conspiracy of love.

Thankful for Blessings

posted Dec 5, 2011, 3:19 PM by Kelly Shannon

The other day I was driving home and a business marquee that read the following caught my eye: “Tis the season to give thanks.” Honestly, the first thought that came to my mind was, “Is it time for Thanksgiving already?” The truthful answer, yes; but, then my mind took another direction on giving thanks: I’m so thankful and blessed beyond belief, how can I pass on acts of goodwill to others?

Grace, defined by Webster’s Dictionary, a disposition to be generous or helpful, is used in one of my favorite quotes by Jackie Windspear: “Grace isn’t a little prayer you chant before receiving a meal. It’s a way to live.” Her quote hits the nail on the head about giving thanks: passing on grace, or goodwill, should be part of our daily lives.

Believe it or not, being thankful can be contagious. It can also inspire us to do thoughtful things that bring warmth to the hearts of others.  Thankfulness stirs emotions this time of the year when we reflect on the many blessings we’ve encountered in the past year, even during our lifetime. Even the smallest blessing should not go unaccounted for, whether it was someone who let you ahead of them in the grocery line because you had fewer grocery items or even for the unwarranted positive compliment from a complete stranger.

Volunteering Benefits the Volunteer and the Community

You would think that Aesop was referring to the spirit of volunteerism found in the Lafayette Oxford University (LOU) community when he wrote, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Our community is no stranger to volunteering. Area nonprofits rely on the passion and dedication of volunteers to operate as an organization. Servicing the community, though, is definitely a two-way street where volunteerism exists.

Make a Difference Day: Week-Long Volunteer Activities

posted Oct 18, 2011, 1:34 PM by Kelly Shannon   [ updated Oct 20, 2011, 2:00 PM ]

Oxford, Mississippi – Volunteer Oxford, the community’s volunteer center, in conjunction with the University of Mississippi Volunteer Services Office encourages the Lafayette Oxford University community to make a difference in the community during a nationwide day of service: Make a Difference Day.

Make a Difference Day is usually observed the fourth Saturday of October, which is October 22 this year.

“Since there is a home football game on that day, we decided to encourage the community to pick their favorite organization or nonprofit and serve as a volunteer there throughout the week of October 17 – 22,” says Kelly Shannon, Director of Volunteer Oxford. “Plenty of volunteer opportunities exist, so the volunteer opportunity can be as dynamic as the volunteer. That’s the beauty of volunteering: both the volunteer and organization benefit in the end.”

Suggested ways to volunteer during October 17 – 22 include, but are not limited to:

Memory Makers

Help individuals living with Alzheimer’s Monday, October 17 and Thursday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with group activities like exercise, socialization, craft-making, and story-telling. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory, thinking skills, and even the ability to carry out the simplest of tasks. Memory Makers is located at 125B Heritage Drive, behind Applebee’s. To volunteer, call Emily King at 662-234-3332.

Yoknapatawpha Arts Council

Volunteers are needed for the event, Art for Everyone, which will be held Tuesday, October 18 at the Powerhouse. Volunteers are needed from 2 to 5 p.m. to help with set up and organize the art sale. Volunteers are also needed from 5 to 7 p.m. to help with the raffle, sell art and work in the food area. Proceeds will support the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council Endowment and the newly founded J.E. Pitts Endowment to ensure continued funding of the arts in the community. To volunteer, email Melanie Addington at .

Oxford Lovepacks

On  Tuesday, October 18 at 9 a.m., volunteer with Lovepacks and help assemble bags of food that can be easily opened by school-aged children (in the Lafayette Oxford community) for weekends and holiday weeks. Lovepacks works through school counselors to identify children in need. The organization operates through donations and food drives through the community.  To volunteer, call Mary Leary at (901) 848-8193.

More Than a Meal

On Tuesday, October 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Stone Center, volunteers can join More Than a Meal in feeding families and tutoring children in need. Volunteers are always needed to serve food and to help with tutoring school-aged children. To volunteer, contact Molly Mogridge at 662-832-5808.
