When first, second, and third graders in the Oxford and Lafayette elementary schools need some extra help in school, Leap Frog is there for them.

Leap Frog is a non-profit after-school tutoring and mentoring program that helps 140 at-risk first, second, and third graders in the Oxford and Lafayette school districts. Students are placed with a tutor that helps them one-on-one throughout the year with anything from homework to mentoring to just playing outside.

Over 140 students volunteer with Leap Frog. Many are personal tutors for the students and some are enrichment volunteers who come after tutoring to mentor and play with the students. College Corp volunteers are also involved with Leap Frog as site managers to help set up for the day, oversee the students and tutors and to help wherever they are needed.

Leap Frog director, Teresa Adams is very involved with the students and feels that Leap Frog makes a great impact in their lives. Last year, 68% percent of Leap Frog students came from low-income, single-parent homes and the time and attention the program gives to the students is invaluable for both the parents and the students.

“Having the opportunity to work with students for three consistent years is very rewarding,” Adams said. “We see them grow, mature and become better readers, ultimately making them more confident and boosting their self-esteem. We grow attached to the students, and it makes us so happy to see them flourish.”

Leap Frog looks to fill volunteer spots every semester for tutoring and mentoring, but currently they are seeking snack donors and sponsors for their holiday parties. Leap Frog is planning two holiday parties in December and is looking for a group to provide a sweet treat for the students and to plan and supervise five games or activities.
